Moving for a contract role? Whether you’re shifting within Ireland or relocating from abroad, some moving costs may qualify for tax-free reimbursement through your company. Here’s my Top Tips on using tax relief to reduce some of the costs for contractors when relocating!
1. First 3 months’ rent
Your first three months’ rent can be claimed as a tax-free expense, and in some cases, this can cut your costs by up to 50%.
2. Temporary subsistence
Need a place while searching for a new home? You can claim up to 10 nights of temporary subsistence, at a rate of €205.53 per night. Even if you paid less.
3. Travel costs
Expenses for travel related to your move are also claimable. This includes transport for you and any family members; think flights, mileage, ferries, or trains.
One condition: Moving expenses are only tax-free if you must actually move to carry out your contract – for example, if your new place of work is at least 100km from where you live now, and you have to be on site every day.
4. Moving your stuff
Furniture removal costs can be reimbursed tax-free when moving for work.
5. Other moving-related costs
What about auctioneer fees, solicitor fees, or stamp duty? As long as the move is for a contract role and the costs are reasonable, these may be reimbursed too.
